Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development

General information

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) was established in 1961 and is based on Paris. Its main task is to promote economic co-operation between industrialised nations, to ensure currency stability and support developing countries. The OECD currently has 35 Member Countries.

José Ángel Gurría Treviño was born in Tampico, Mexico on 8 May 1950 and has been Secretary-General of the OECD since 1 June 2006. He holds a BA in Economics from UNAM (Mexico) and an MA in Economics from the University of Leeds. Between 1994 and 1998 he was Foreign Minister of Mexico, between 1998 and 2000 Minister of Finance of Mexico. Gurría was involved in negotiations on Mexico's admission to the OECD in 1994 and was head of the OECD Council of Ministers in 1999.
